July 17, 2024 [Gasworld]- Industrial gases major Messer has unveiled plans to build a new green hydrogen plant in Brainergy Park Julich, Germany.

Set to be operational in the fall of 2025, the plant will have a nominal output of 10MW and a production capacity of up to 180 kilogrammes of hydrogen per hour.

The plant will be operated by HyDN GmbH, a joint venture between thedistrict of Duren and Messer, which believes the plant will be one of the largest of its kind in Germany.

NEUMAN & ESSER has won a contract to supply two electrolysers for hydrogen production and two diaphragm compressors for pressurising the hydrogen and the site. Messer will be responsible for storing and filling the hydrogen, in addition to quality assurance.

Virginia Esly, Chief Operating Officer for Europe at Messer, said the project marks another important strategic step to support its customers in decarbonisation.

She added, “Messer is involved in the engineering of the hydrogen production plant, will take over the operation of the plant in the long term, and distribute the green hydrogen.”

Green hydrogen produced at the site will be primarily used 25 fuel cell buses. Five of the 25 buses are already in operation, with the remaining 20 set to be on the road in November 2024.

According to hydrogen fuel cell specialist Ballard, Germany hopes to have over 900 hydrogen-powered buses in operation by 2030. As of 2023, the country had around 145 hydrogen-powered buses on its roads.

The plant’s construction is being funded with €14.7m from the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMDV). The capital is part of the National Innovation Programme Hydrogen 2 (NIP2).
