May 09, 2024 [Hydrogen Insight]- Chinese company Shanxi International Energy Group has signed an agreement with a local government in northern China to produce 350,000 tonnes a year of green aviation fuel made from wind-powered hydrogen, according to multiple local reports.

The ¥10.7bn (1.48bn) project in the administrative region of Jarud Banner, Inner Mongolia, (also spelled as Zharut Banner) will include 1GW of new wind power, which will be used on an off-grid basis to produce green hydrogen that would then be combined with captured CO2 to produce e-kerosene chemically identical to fossil-based jet fuel.

The project is due to be built in two phases — with 300MW of wind power in the first, producing 100,000 tonnes of green kerosene a year; and 700MW in the second, with an annual output of 250,000 tonnes.

Both phases will includes vanadium flow batteries to smooth the output from the wind turbines.

The deal between Shanxi International Energy Group and the People’s Government of Jarud Banner was sealed in a signing ceremony.

The local administration forecasts annual tax revenue of ¥548m from annual sales revenue of ¥4.23bn.
