HAV Hydrogen to Develop Containerized Hydrogen Energy System
02.13.2024 By Tank Terminals - NEWS

February 13, 2024 [Safety 4 sea]- HAV Hydrogen has secured NOK 12.4 million in funding from Innovation Norway to build, test, and certify a full-scale prototype of its Zero Emission Pod, a containerized hydrogen energy system for ships.

According to HAV Hydrogen, the DNV-approved Zero Emission Pod is a complete deck house containing multiple fuel cells, a hydrogen distribution system, control and safety systems, emergency shutdown system, ventilation system, cooling system, and DC/DC power distribution system.

Our system is designed based on a risk-based methodology in order to comply with the safety barrier requirements of IMO’s fuel cell guidelines. This is essential to create a mass market product that can be quickly adopted by the maritime industry- said Kristian Osnes, managing director of HAV Hydrogen.

The Zero Emission Pod can be used for the main propulsion systems or as additional power supply on vessels, HAV Hydrogen notes. The prototype will be built and tested in 2024 at SINTEF’s facility in Trondheim, Norway. The grant aims to support the pilot and demonstration phase, promoting new technologies for increased environmental protection and business competitiveness.

Adopting a safe and easy-to-install hydrogen energy system is an attractive shortcut for vessel operators and owners that are keen to decarbonise their fleet without incurring unreasonable hight costs in doing so. – commented Gunnar Larsen, CEO of HAV Group

HAV Group, HAV Hydrogen’s parent company, will provide the remaining funds for the prototype.
