Backer of Rejected Shannon LNG Plant Seeks Planning Meeting with Kerry County Council

October 6, 2023[Irish Independent]- Move signals owners have not given up on site after An Bord Pleanala refused permission last month for controversial gas terminal pending completion of Government energy security review.

A subsidiary of US group New Fortress Energy has requested a pre-planning consultation with Kerry County Council relating to the proposed construction of power infrastructure on the Shannon Estuary despite having been refused permission by An Bord Pleanala last month for a €650m liquefied natural gas terminal and power plants at the location.

The company, Shannon LNG, made the pre-application consultation request to Kerry County Council on September 29, more than two weeks after it was refused permission for a development that was set to include a major liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal, two gas-fired power stations and a battery energy storage facility.

The facility was denied permission because it was deemed contrary to current Government policy – a position which could change after the Government completes a review of Ireland’s security of energy supply.

The meeting request with Kerry County Council relates to a planned grid connection and the construction of two electricity substations.

Earlier this year, Shannon LNG secured capacity contracts with EirGrid for the supply of 353MW of electricity from the planned gas-fired power plant at the site to the national grid. The Irish subsidiary must have the plants completed by October 2026 in order to fulfil the contract.

The site on the Shannon Estuary is directly opposite Moneypoint and close to Tarbert power station.
