November 25, 2022 [Port News] – A new carbon dioxide (CO2) terminal is to be built at the Port of Immingham, the UK’s largest port, enabling the large-scale import and export of liquid bulk gas to and from the region.
To be developed by Harbour Energy and Associated British Ports (ABP), the terminal will act as a hub connecting CO2 emissions generated from UK industry to Harbour Energy’s Viking CCS high-capacity CO2 storage sites in the Southern North Sea.
Previously known as V Net Zero, the Viking CCS network represents a joint effort between several UK energy partners to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by ten million tonnes in-line with 2030 goals.
ABP’s addition to the network will see the organisation investing in new infrastructure including a jetty, which is planned to be used for import and export handling of liquid bulk products such as CO2 cargoes and the handling of green ammonia.
Commenting on the announcement, Steve Cox, EVP HSES and Global Services of Harbour Energy, said, “ABP’s dual-purpose jetty will support the reduction in the UK’s emissions and, critically, amplifies the Viking CCS network’s potential to provide a viable solution for stranded CO2 emissions from companies across the UK.”
In addition to helping meet the UK’s Net Zero emission targets, the development aims to drive inward investment to the Humber and Lincolnshire regions, supporting the creation and safeguarding of UK industrial jobs.
According to Henrik K. Pedersen, CEO of ABP, the organization’s existing ports on the Humber already play a role in supporting the UK’s energy transition through involvement in Green Port Hull and development of a large-scale green hydrogen production in Immingham.
He added that the current project represents a ‘critical step’ in strengthening the Port of Immingham’s position at the epicenter of the UK decarbonization agenda.
