New Fuel Storage Facility Proposed

January, 2020 [Vesta] – A NEW fuel farm capable of storing ethanol could be built at La Collette, if planning permission is granted.

ATF Global Ventures has applied to create a storage facility on Route du Veule, complete with two 750,000-litre tanks and a two-storey office building. According to the company, which sells road, marine and aviation fuel, along with heating oil, it is beginning to outgrow its current facility at the Airport and needs additional storage.

ATF has a requirement to increase its infrastructure beyond its current storage at Jersey Airport Fuel Farm. In order to better facilitate its business growth in the longer term, it has been established that there is a need to increase petrol storage capabilities,’ a design statement accompanying the company’s planning application said.

Due to storage capacity restrictions at Jersey Airport Fuel Farm there is a requirement to install a petrol fuel farm at La Collette.

The facility will be used for the storage and handling of petrol.

ATF currently sells petrol with a 5% ethanol content and diesel with a 7% fame content – which it claims is more environmentally friendly.

The company says that the new site would allow it to store ethanol to blend with regular fuel and conform to an EU directive setting renewable energy targets should the government choose to adopt it.

According to the directive, one way of achieving targets is to blend more biofuels into road fuels.

The design statement said: ‘The [new] fuel farm has been designed in such a way that future ethanol storage and blending can be added at a later date, ensuring the site is future-proofed to meet any States of Jersey legislative changes in respect of greenhouse gas emissions – aligning to the European parliament directive.

‘Currently, La Collette Terminal, the sole bulk import facility in Jersey, does not have this provision, therefore ATF’s proposed facility would provide the opportunity to accelerate carbon reductions and assist in reaching the target of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.’

A number of companies already operate fuel storage facilities at La Collette including Rubis, PDJ, Channel Islands Fuels and Jersey Gas.
