UPDATE 1-Gunvor Shuts One CDU at Rotterdam Oil Refinery, Saying it is Uneconomical - Reuters News

November 25, 2019 [Reuters] – Gunvor Group GGL.UL has shut one of its two crude distillation units at its Rotterdam oil refinery in the Netherlands as it is uneconomical to run, a spokesman for the energy trading firm said.

The CDU will be down into March next year when the 88,000 barrel-per-day refinery will undergo maintenance.

While it isn’t currently economical to run CDU1, Gunvor is taking the opportunity of having the unit shut to conduct preparation for an upcoming refinery turnaround and some potential future developments,” the spokesman said.

Geneva-based Gunvor said last month that during the overhaul, the plant would be reconfigured to produce some low sulphur fuel oil that complies with new, global shipping rules coming into effect from January. (Full Story)

The company is also conducting studies on the installation of a unit to make hydrotreated vegetable oil, which would use up excess hydrogen coming from its refomer.

As part of its energy transition efforts, Gunvor is focusing on biofuels and reducing the carbon exhaust at its three European refineries. It bought two biofuel plants earlier this year.
