Pertamina Launches Its First FSO Ship

August 10, 2012 [Jakarta Globe] - Pertamina has taken a step forward in helping the country become an autonomous producer of power, with the state-owned energy company unveiling its first Floating Storage and Offloading ship on Wednesday.

An FSO processes hydrocarbons sourced nearby and store oil so it can be later offloaded onto a tanker.

“This Abherka ship is historic because it’s the first project of Pertamina shipping that converted a tanker into a FSO,” president director Karen Agustiawan said at the event.

Priyono said the ship used 70 percent local content and was completed on time.

The FSO ship has a capacity of 600,000 barrels of oil. It will receive oil from the West Madura Offshore Block, which has 77 wells and is operated by Pertamina Hulu Energi West Madura Offshore.

Pertamina said the platform would help PHE WMO produce 30,000 barrels of oil per day. PHE WMO is aiming to this year produce 20,000 barrels of oil per day and 166.4 million cubic feet per day of gas.

“It is a testament to the ability of Pertamina subsidiaries to better utilize their resources with the hopes of creating efficiency and generating more revenue for the state,” she was quoted as saying by Antara state news agency.

Priyono said the completion of the FSO moved the country closer to being an autonomous energy producer. “It is in line with the new paradigm for the upstream sector: improving the nation’s [energy] capacity rather than merely generating state revenue,” he said.

Subsidiary Pertamina Shipping will operate the ship under a 10-year contract valued at $71 million.
