Simon Announces New Fuel Storage Contract With Petroplus
09.15.2009 - NEWS
OIL refiner PetroPlus, which suspended production at its Seal Sands terminal earlier this year pending a sale, has extended a contract with neighbouring Simon Storage to handle biofuels used in its BioPlus blend.

Simon said it was providing a fully integrated solution for the Swiss-based refiner, which would open up “a wealth of opportunities to increase the volume of products that we will handle in the future”.

The contract includes 40,000m³ of carbon steel tankage, fully automated road loading facilities, integrated bioethanol in-line injection systems and batch biodiesel blending systems.

Simon’s Seal Sands Terminal has capacity for 600,000t of road fuel products a year for Petroplus.

At the time of announcing its closure, PetroPlus’ Teesside refinery was operating at half of its 117,000 barrel a day capacity, while throughput at its only other UK plant at Coryton is down by nearly 10%.

Simon Storage MD Martyn Lyons, said the contract was “great news for the North-east”.

He added: “We have continued to invest in Simon’s Seal Sands Terminal to ensure that it remains the first choice road fuel distribution terminal for the North-east.

“We are committed to ensuring that the terminal is not only the most efficient with the least queuing times, but also provides the most flexible facilities.

“We have handled more than a million tonnes of gasoline, diesel, biodiesel and bioethanol at Seal Sands within the past three years, and this new contract with Petroplus opens up a wealth of opportunities to increase the volume of products that we will handle in the future,” added Mr Lyons
