Tanks to fuel region ahead of bio boom
09.29.2009 - NEWS
multi-million pound expansion at Immingham's two specialist bulk liquid and gas storage facilities is about to be completed, as the region readies itself for a biofuels boom. Recent investments have included the design and construction of eight new carbon steel tanks on time and on budget, giving 50,500m3 of additional tank capacity which is already either in use or under contract.

The new carbon steel tanks include four 7,500m3 tanks and one 5,500m3 tank at the East Terminal, and three 5,000m3 tanks at Immingham West. The capital expenditure programme is continuing with the rebuilding of two further tanks to handle exports of molten sulphur and the replacement of an existing facility with a much larger 11,800m3 tank capable of storing fuel oils.
The latest investments follows a major upgrade of facilities for heavy and white oils, including increased product transfer rates with the adjacent refineries. In December 2008 installation and commissioning of new pipeline pumping systems enabled delivery of hydrocarbons at a combined rate of at least 1100m3/hr into the local refinery network. The same pumps can also be used for product exports to the Immingham jetties, which are capable of handling up to 50,000 tonne vessels.
At Simon’s Immingham West Terminal, further new pipelines and pumping systems were installed in 2008 to enable biodiesel to be blended into diesel, and further investments have been made in 2009 to enable bioethanol to be blended into petrol.
