May 08, 2025 [Storage Terminals Magazine]- Advario and Braskem Idesa officially inaugurated the Terminal Quimica Puerto Mexico, a state-of-the-art ethane storage facility located in the Port of Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz.
Developed as a 50:50 joint venture between the two companies, the terminal represents a significant milestone in Mexico’s petrochemical and energy infrastructure. The project involved a total investment of $500 million and generated over 2,000 jobs during its construction phase.
TQPM is set to play a vital role in securing the long-term ethane supply for the Braskem Idesa Petrochemical Complex. The new terminal will enable the complex to operate at full production capacity, supporting potential expansion plans of up to 25 percent. It features two 50,000 m³ cryogenic storage tanks, a dedicated jetty, and an integrated pipeline system for the safe reception, storage, and transportation of cryogenic ethane.
With a total storage capacity of 54,000 tonnes, the terminal will help ensure a reliable feedstock supply, allowing Braskem Idesa to produce up to 1,050,000 tonnes of polyethylene annually—comprising 750,000 tonnes of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and 300,000 tonnes of low-density polyethylene (LDPE).
Bas Verkooijen, CEO of Advario, commented: “The inauguration of TQPM marks a proud moment for Advario and an important milestone in our global growth journey. This project exemplifies our strong partnership with Braskem Idesa and reinforces our leadership in chemical storage and logistics. Our expansion into Mexico reflects our commitment to supporting dynamic, high-growth petrochemical markets.”
TQPM is strategically located within the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec (CIIT)—a flagship development initiative spearheaded by the Government of Mexico aimed at fostering economic growth in the country’s southeast.
To support terminal operations, the Braskem Group acquired two modern cryogenic ethane carriers, Brilliant Future and Brave Future. Each vessel measures 188 metres in length and has a capacity of 36,000 cubic metres. The ships will transport ethane from Texas, USA, to the Port of Coatzacoalcos and are designed to reduce CO₂ emissions by 40 percent compared to the industry average over the past decade.
The inauguration of TQPM represents a strategic advancement in regional petrochemical capabilities, enhancing feedstock security and promoting sustainable industrial growth in Mexico.
